Philosteopathy Ep.6 Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Our topic for Philosteopathy this month was Myofascial Pain Syndrome. The concept has been around since the 1960’s. We discussed some of the possible etiologies from the Travell trigger points to overuse syndromes, ROM loss, Autoimmune Disease, low Vit D, side effects of statin drugs, straining the fascial system with poor posture and psycho-emotional trauma. We spoke about how chronic myofascial pain may lead to central sensitization – a cycle of negative emotions and thoughts reiterating the narrative of your pain. The thoughts of “I am damaged, I am broken, or I cannot get better” being played over and over in one’s head. An important aspect of addressing our patient’s myofascial pain is listening to the patient’s words, observing their behaviors and slowly addressing their fears if they are ready. This often means addressing their pain with many different modalities such as manipulation or injections. Although the keystone to a positive outcome seems to be empowering the patient to take ownership of their health to change their identity.
