Monday evening Pickens City Council meeting was packed full of citizens in the gallery. Discussions of a new 4 way stop, water main fixes, police vehicle buy outs, and supportive speech from Tammy Anthony regarding the renaming of the Pickens Rec Center. The renaming will now proceed to a second reading.(Side note)Although many thought that there was a “hold back” on the Rec Center to be named after Cheri Anthony…. we don’t believe this was the case. The aim of council was to get policy in place first because there has been no preceding president. Council needed to set the foundation of credential, and parameter of ordinance and policy to rename a city owned building before they move forward. Anything short of this would open Pickens City Council to a barrage of citizens desiring a city owned entity or building named after another citizen. Cheri Anthony has worked for over 20 years with the Rec department and has recently retired. I.e. … Parameters/Credentials of ordinance policy:1. Time of service to the city2. Substantial monetary donation3. Substantial acreage donation
