Pierre Pucheu: Vichy France's Fascist Minister Executed for Nazi Collaboration

from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History

Pierre Pucheu was one of the most influential ministers of Vichy France, helping enforce anti-Jewish policies and collaborating with Nazi Germany before becoming the first senior Vichy official executed for treason.Born into modest circumstances, Pucheu built an impressive career in the steel industry before entering politics during the turbulent 1930s. As France slid into crisis, he moved steadily toward far-right movements, embracing anti-communism and supporting parties sympathetic to fascist ideology. After France’s defeat in 1940 and the creation of the Vichy regime, Pucheu quickly became one of its most influential ministers. First responsible for industrial production and later appointed Minister of the Interior, he played a key role in aligning Vichy’s administration with Nazi Germany. He enforced anti-Jewish laws, created special units dealing with “Jewish Affairs,” and personally approved lists of hostages to be executed in retaliation for resistance attacks—actions that sealed his reputation as one of Vichy France’s most willing collaborators. As the war turned against the Axis, Pucheu attempted to regain political favor by aligning himself with French forces in North Africa. But the shift came too late. Arrested and charged with treason, he faced trial in Algiers, accused of serving the enemy and aiding German repression on French soil.On 20 March 1944, Pierre Pucheu was executed by firing squad—the first senior Vichy official to face capital punishment under the Free French. His downfall remains a stark reminder of how political ambition, ideology, and collaboration with an occupying power can destroy both a nation and the individuals who choose the wrong side of history. This episode is part of the series Fascist Millionaires and Rich Traitors.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
