Ispirandosi dichiaratamente ai Paesi occidentali, Pietro I intraprese una serie di guerre per allargare i confini della Russia fino a trasformarla in un impero, stravolgendo l’organizzazione amministrativa e sociale e facendone un Paese moderno. Pietro il Grande fu un monarca assoluto che impose al suo popolo cambiamenti drastici e pesanti tasse pur di poter applicare le sue riforme.Come arrivò al trono Pietro? Quando, nel 1682, era morto lo zar suo fratellastro, Fëdor III, s’era trovato al centro d’una contesa sanguinosa. L’altro fratellastro, Ivan, figlio di primo letto di suo padre Alessio, era il successore designato, ma era anche semicieco e ritardato mentale. S’imponeva così la candidatura di Pietro o, quantomeno, il suo affiancamento al ruolo supremo. Si scatenò a quel punto una lotta all’ultimo sangue tra il clan della prima moglie di Alessio, i Miloslavskij, e quello di sua madre Natalia, i Nariskyn. Sobillato dai primi, il corpo degli streltsy (archibugieri e arcieri scelti) fece irruzione nel Cremlino e massacrò sotto gli occhi del piccolo Pietro la fazione materna. Per il futuro zar fu un trauma indelebile, forse all’origine del tic che l’afflisse per il resto dei suoi giorni: un tremito al capo. Il giorno dopo la strage, il 26 maggio 1682, fu comunque eletto zar in coppia con Ivan V.
