La Grande Ambasceria, ovvero il grande viaggio diplomatico voluto da Pietro, si risolse in un fiasco politico. A quel punto, Pietro stipulò una tregua trentennale con l’Impero ottomano e volse le mire espansionistiche a nord, contro gli svedesi, padroni del Baltico. Lo scontro con Carlo XII, giovane condottiero che viveva solo per combattere, durò, con brevi pause, una ventina d’anni e si concluse con il trionfo di Pietro e il declino della potenza scandinava.Umiliati nel 1700 dagli svedesi a Narva, i russi si rifecero con gli interessi nel 1704 nella stessa Narva e a Dorpat. Quindi inaugurarono una tattica destinata a non tramontare mai: ritirarsi all’interno e lasciar fiaccare dal freddo e dalla lunghezza delle linee di approvvigionamento il nemico. Stremati, gli svedesi vennero sbaragliati nel 1709 a Poltava.
