John's story was particularly challenging because he landed in LA just two months before the recession hit in 2000. Finding jobs and stability in the music industry was difficult for him. John lived in hostels with six to eight people for three to four months until he got a job and built his credit score. As a young adult, John was naive and didn't know what credit was in America. He thought that having money in his bank account would allow him to rent a place to live, but he was wrong. He had to learn the hard way about building credit and how things worked in America. John's early years in LA were full of challenges, but he survived and learned a lot of discipline. He believes that the difficult times he faced built his character and developed his personality, and he often says that it separates the boys from the men. John also shares his struggles in finding people who were artistically aligned with him or finding affirmation to stay together for a while. Many people come to LA and have to be part of multiple bands to pay their bills. But for John, the only way to move forward was as a solo artist who writes everything and then puts the band together.
