What makes someone good? One of the biggest themes Leya sees running through the first movie is the question of whether being good always means following the law. That's a particularly interesting question in a story about pirates. Pirates are, by definition, breaking the law. Yet the movies give us characters who are far more morally complicated than simply "good guys" and "bad guys." Captain Jack Sparrow is a pirate. Will Turner isn't. Elizabeth Swann begins as a proper young woman trapped by the expectations of her society—but eventually becomes a pirate herself. Barbossa is a villain who sometimes finds himself fighting alongside the heroes. Davy Jones is both terrifying and tragic.
