Pitch-Rigging Scheme Uncovered | Cleveland Guardians News

Prosecutors paint a damning picture of Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase and former teammate Luis Ortiz, accusing them of orchestrating a pitch-rigging scheme to fleece bettors over half a million dollars — with Clase allegedly even coaching Ortiz to lie about bribes by pretending payments were for horses. The duo, along with a third man, used coded language like “chicken” and “rooster” to signal pitch manipulation, texting bettors when to place wagers based on game situations. Their frantic attempts to cover up — including redacting bank records — are now central evidence in federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering. With phones already seized by the FBI and a November trial looming, the case threatens to unravel trust in baseball’s integrity, as Clase and Ortiz face justice together after MLB stepped in during 2025.
