After establishing himself as a feature screenwriter, Malcolm first entered the series TV space by rising up the ranks of Fox’s hit drama EMPIRE over its first three seasons. Following EMPIRE, Spellman joined the staff of a platform launching mystery drama, as Executive Producer of TRUTH BE TOLD, starring Octavia Spencer, in its inaugural season—among the earliest and most widely viewed of Apple+ first wave of original shows.Along with the historic blockbuster release of FALCON, Spellman marked another personal first earlier this year when HIP HOP UNCOVERED, the docuseries he Executive Produced, aired on FX. Currently, Spellman is consulting on another streamer-launching event series, BEL AIR, Peacock’s revival of the Will Smith-led FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR, originally on NBC.Starting in 2019, Spellman and his wife Nichelle Tramble-Spellman, herself a premiere TV Showrunner, partnered to launch their production company The 51 Entertainment,  striking a first-look partnership with HBO. In addition to developing scripted drama and comedy series unscripted series and feature films, The 51 was also conceived by Spellman and Tramble-Spellman as a “collective”, with a multi-pronged focus: producing stories and story forms that tap into the universal appeal of cultural specificity; lifting a diverse range of emerging voices; facilitating a stronger artistic community in the industry—a space for fellowship and solidarity, cross-pollination and a support system across discipline for active and aspiring artists of the entertainment business.On the music side, Malcolm runs Blackball Universe, an indie record label in Oakland whose artist, Fantastic Negrito, won the 2017 and 2019 Grammy Awards for "Best Contemporary Blues Album and is currently nominated for a third Grammy.  Malcolm also has various music driven documentaries in development.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram: @thesamandjimProducer: J.R.
