Playing Defense

What does it look like to stand firm when we cannot even see what we are up against? Drawing from Ephesians 6, this message pulls back the curtain on the spiritual battle surrounding every one of us. The core revelation is both humbling and clarifying: our real enemy is not the coworker who frustrates us, not the person championing ideas we disagree with, and not the political opponent we argue with online. Scripture is clear that our struggle is against rulers, authorities, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. When we misidentify the enemy, we waste our energy fighting the wrong opponent entirely. The message uses a vivid and memorable illustration of a blindfolded football team to drive this point home. Imagine trying to play defense when you cannot see who is running at you or where the ball is going. That is precisely our condition when we try to face spiritual opposition in our own strength and understanding. The good news is that God does not leave us blindfolded and helpless. He calls us to stand firm, not in our own power, but in his, and to put on the full armor of God. This is not passive resignation but an active, deliberate posture of faith. As we begin to recognize the moments when we are tempted to direct our frustration at people rather than at the true source of opposition, we become better equipped to stand strong where it truly counts.
