Playing God Then Blaming Fate? Cultural Toxins

from Nagwa Malik's Naked Thoughts

Many things we cling to in our culture that are considered as haram or shirk or biddah, from arranged marriages to joint family to taweez/charms and saints. Even calling husband's by their name...which pagan cultures consider taboo but Islam says to do so as you are equals (Hazrat Aisha used to call the Prophet(pbuh) by his name). They are things we tend to laugh about but these very things add up to making our society toxic. In many cases they are haram and thus punishable. When will we learn to discard toxic culture and take on the freedom religion has provided us with? It's funny how religion is giving us more freedom whereas our pagan culture is restricting us. The fact that we are brainwashed to think that these things are not so bad and have their pros, to justify them, is more dangerous and that is how shirk and biddah begins.
