By Newsbreak Producer Shanell Daniel - A call is being made for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate's (IPID's) mandate to be extended so that it could become a National Preventative Mechanism institution. The call was made to the Portfolio Committee on Police last week during the first leg of oral submissions on the IPID Amendment Bill.  If heeded, it could mean that IPID would be enabled to conduct preventive monitoring in conformity with the provisions of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
