By Newsbreak Producer Matthew Veeran - The Biodiversity Law Centre (BLC) is pushing ahead with its appeal focused on objecting Karpowership's environmental authorisation in Richards Bay. They are concerned by the negative environmental impact of the project, with Richards Bay being a habitat for migratory bird species and also known to be rich in marine life. Karpowership aims to boost power generation, create jobs and minimise the occurrence of load shedding. The deadline for achieving commercial close for the project is the 31st of December 2023. If the appeal is allowed to suspend environmental authorisation, Karpowership stands to lose its "Preferred Bidder" status. Kate Handley is the Executive Director of the Biodiversity Law Centre.
