#PODCAST First-of-its-kind initiative launched in 3 countries to empower civil society in sustainably controlling rabies #sabcnews

By Newsbreak Producer Tashlan Naidoo - The Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) has launched a first of its kind initiative that will see community healthcare workers trained to empower individuals, civil society, and communities to sustainably control the disease. The campaign launched with an initial focus on three target countries, including Nepal, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. According to the alliance, an estimated 59-thousand people die from rabies infections every year, with more than 95 per cent of deaths occurring in Africa and Asia, mostly in poor, rural areas. Individual centers within selected communities will be connected to partner and collaborate through the Partners for Community Dog Health (PCDH) program. Animal Relief for Rural Communities (ARRC) is one of those organisation based in the Limpopo Province.
