#PODCAST Institute for Race Relations unsure whether the NHI Bill has met the criteria for public consultations #sabcnews

By Newsbreak Producer Taresh Harreeparshad - The Institute for Race Relations (IRR) is not convinced that the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill has met the Constitutional criteria for public consultations. The organisation says signing the bill into law flouts section 79 of the Constitution- which states that the president cannot give his assent to a bill if he 'has reservations about its constitutionality'. According to the IRR when the Bill was before the National Assembly, over 300,000 public submissions were disregarded. Currently the NHI Bill has been passed by the National Assembly and has been referred to President Cyril Ramaphosa for signing into law.
