It is Tuesday and we are going to talk about microphones on the daily grateful I know I know but I got an email and you know We have this thing that we do on Tuesdays called technical Tuesdays And I actually got an email from a nice lady who wants to start a podcast and she doesn't know what kind of microphone to get and I Said okay. I'll do this Tuesday podcast about it. How's that? So let's get on with it I could do like an hour and a half on podcasting.
It's a matter of fact I've done that before as a matter of fact if you go to a YouTube channel called clear-order podcasters There's about a one-hour video that I stuck on there about Podcasting which you need to start podcast with but right now I just you know I want to answer about microphones and this are the microphones the most important thing you need for a podcast No, the idea what the podcast is gonna be about is the most important thing that you need and then you have to understand that After you know what the need is how you're going to fill it via your podcast and all of that could type of stuff But then after we get to all of that and there's a bunch of that to get through by the way You want to pick out a microphone and you want a good microphone if there's cheap microphones, but you want a good microphones Let's talk about the different types of microphones and how they come. All right. I'm talking to you right now through a dynamic microphone Okay, these are ideal for podcast and radio and a bunch of stuff like that because even if you record in an untreated room And I am in a treated room But if you're in an untreated room These are really really good to record with because they are very forgiving of background noise very very forgiving of that And if you get a good dynamic microphone Then you're going to be even better probably the most expensive well There's a lot of them, but the two top ones are the ones that well one I used for 30 years It's still in the other room. I'm not using anymore and that is the RE 20.
Okay, that is a great microphone It's my electro voice and if you do you remember Rush Limbaugh? He spoke into the golden microphone That was an RE 20 that they spray painted gold for him, but that's an RE 20 microphone And it is a great microphone. I used it for 30 some years. I'm now using another one I'm using as a matter of fact I've moved all of my audio equipment to an Australian company called ROD and I'm speaking to you And what's called the Rode PodMic USB, which is a really good microphone They also have the Rode PodMic by itself.
We'll talk more about that This microphone is 200 bucks by the way that RE 20 about 450 bucks Just under the RE 20 is the sure SM 7B which is about 400 bucks and then there's the sure SM 7 DB I believe it's called which is about 450 bucks and Most people like the just the regular 7B. It's a black microphone. If you look at YouTube, you've seen them. They're everywhere It's a good microphone.
It's a real good microphone I love sure microphones, but I like this microphone best and I've had my choice of any microphone I've wanted well except for one that is $3,500 and I can't afford it. If you want to buy it for me send me an email These are dynamic microphones, so I like that then the next thing is condenser microphones condenser microphones You've got to have a treated room because they pick up all the noise you got to have a treated room The microphone I want which is a nomin Microphone at 3,500 bucks. I spoke into one of those I did an audiobook using one of those for a company in Brooksville, which is now gone by the way But they had a not only a treated room I had a treated building that they put me out in to do this and oh my gosh It picks these condenser microphones and there's a lot of really good condenser microphones Rhodes got one that is very very nice, and they've got you know, they've got there's a lot of them out there Reasonably priced I think the road one that I'm talking about is a hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars I don't know cuz I don't own it. I've used them before and they sound wonderful.
They sound absolutely wonderful But you know who uses those? People who well play music and that's one thing or play guitar or something like that Also people who do audiobooks use that and there are podcasters who use them who have a very nice treated room And I will tell you with your voice going through a condenser microphone a lot of times a lot of times It just sounds better Okay, it picks up all of the the deepness of your voice and and you know The sound is coming out of the side of your mouth as opposed to you know, it's just it's they're good I rather use a dynamic microphone because I do a podcast every day which I'm doing right now I'm doing a daily podcast and with a condenser microphone You have a I have a tendency not everybody but I have a tendency you have to go back and do a lot of editing to where I do virtually No editing using the dynamic microphone now after you have these two different types of microphones You you have a choice a USB microphone is very convenient because you can take that microphone and plug it directly into your computer boom goes A dynamite right into your computer and if you have a software program like audacity which you can get for free You can use that and you can record your podcast with that if you want to spend some money. I used to use Adobe Audition I don't use it anymore, but I wonderful program There's just literally thousands of TV shows and movies have all been the audio that you hear on a lot of these things came off of Adobe Audition It's a high-end program. You can rent it for about $25 a month You can't own it, but you can rent it and I used it for years I just stopped using it when I bought a certain piece of hardware and I don't use it anymore because the hardware kind of takes the place of it But you know USB microphones directly into the computer directly into the to the editing you're right there Now you want to take a step up and get better quality than you want an XLR microphone The XLR microphone doesn't plug directly into your computer It plugs directly into an audio interface, which is what I'm using right now Now I'm using the Pod mic USB microphone and if I wanted to use USB I could plug a USB cord into this and go directly into my computer And that would be very nice and road gives you all this software for your computer to help edit the stuff that's coming out of your Microphone and it's very nice But what I do is I go directly into an audio interface and the audio interface I use is the Roadcaster Pro because it has all kinds of fun things you heard the opening music if you don't have an interface Like this when you heard the you know, you would have I would have to put that music in later I just put it in there right now where I could put something like this on the label right in there So it absolutely is believable.
So do I like that? Oh, no Well, yes, I really do but you have all the access on this piece of equipment And when you're done if you've made no mistakes if you haven't said a bad word you can You know, just do no editing you can edit within this piece of hardware or you can go to Audacity if I have to edit I use I go to Audacity after I'm done with this so it's it's just that simple So XLR microphones provide a higher quality as far as audio is concerned because you're going with a thicker cord into an audio interface So that's what you have for that and that is as simple as it gets I hope that that helps you out now. You just noticed I'm putting on the closing music if I weren't using this particular audio interface I would have to put this in later in post in post production They say you can fix everything in post they say but I don't have to because it's right here I can turn the volume up on it I can turn the volume down because I have these little slider bars and it's very nice. So tomorrow is wacky Wednesday I have no idea what we're gonna talk about but it will be fun.
