By Newsbreak Producer Taliesha Naidoo - Environmental organisations say the R1.6 billion being made available by National Treasury for disaster relief is not enough. The allocation was announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana during his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement yesterday. Godongwana further announced that government has created a resource pool to specifically respond to future disasters. In this regard, R372 million has been added to the municipal disaster response grant, while R1.2 billion has been added to the municipal disaster recovery grant, to cover the repair and rehabilitation of infrastructure damaged by flooding in February and March 2023. Bobby Peek - the director of non-profit environmental justice organisation - groundWork - says government is fuelling the damage done to the environment while attempting to repair it...
