According to the Global Forest Watch, 17-thousand-685 Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) alerts were reported in South Africa in 2023. This is 6 percent higher than the number of fire alerts reported in 2022, and the highest number of fire alerts reported in South Africa since 2012.
