By Newsbreak Executive Producer Salma Patel - Today marks the start of the Islamic month of Ramadan in the country. The month is unique in that Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn until dusk and increase prayer and spirituality. Also unique to this month and the country is the free distribution of haleem by religious organisations, charities and mosques every weekend. Haleem is a nourishing, lentil broth usually cooked with chicken or meat and served with naan bread and a spritz of lemon. The broth - usually cooked on the open, outside fire - is known to re-hydrate the body after a long day of fasting. Mohammed Carrim, spokesperson of a charitable organisation at Phoenix north of Durban called BAPA (pronounced phonetically) explains why they often distribute this delicious broth...
