#PODCAST WORLD DIABETES DAY: We find out more about a popular diabetes drug - that people are now using to lose weight #sabcnews

from Newsbreak · host SABC News and Current Affairs

By Newsbreak Producer Matthew Veeran - Today on World Diabetes Day, our Medical Monitor goes for an "outside the box" approach, telling you all about a popular diabetes medicine, that people are now using to lose weight. Mounjaro or tirzepatide has been dubbed the "King Kong" of weight loss jabs - and it's already been approved in the United Kingdom for treating obesity. The injection, similar to an insulin pen makes you feel fuller, so you ultimately eat less. In trials, people on it have lost a fifth of their body weight and UK regulators now say it's safe and effective enough to be sold and prescribed in that region. With this in mind, Matthew delved deeper to find out all about it and why people - including various celebrities - are using it to shed a few extra kilos...  * This year's theme for World Diabetes Day is "Access to Diabetes Care". It underscores the urgent need to address the barriers faced by many in accessing diabetes care and support.
