POEM FROM TAMIL LITERATURE -SENTINEL OF SENTHIL'S MURUGAN’S SANDS

from BEYOND THE OBVIOUS · host Purushothaman C

ABOUT THE POEM:The poem SENTINEL OF SENTHIL'S  MURUGAN’S SANDS is a panegyric (praise poem) addressed to a noble king named Maran, who is lauded for his extraordinary greatness. The poet compares him to Shiva’s third eye, which shines more gloriously than the other two eyes — just as Maran surpasses the two other mighty kings of his time. The poet then offers a moral reflection: even if a king possesses all the traditional symbols of military glory — elephants, horses, chariots, and valiant soldiers — true victory lies in ruling by the path of righteousness (dharma). He urges that a ruler should neither arrogantly claim another’s virtues as his own nor despise or destroy another merely because he is “not one of us.” Instead, the ideal king should be:Like the Sun in his masculine strength,Like the Moon in his gentle temperament,Like the Rain in his generous charity.Such a king removes the poverty of the common folk and ensures peace and prosperity. The poet ends with a heartfelt benediction, praying that the king live for countless years — even longer than the countless sands along the seashore of Senthil, the sacred abode of Lord Murugan.SENTINEL OF SENTHIL MURUGAN’S SANDSO sovereign Maran! Loftier you shineThan monarchs twain, as on the Lord’s own faceThe brow’s third eye outshines with fire divine.Though steeds and tuskers charge in warlike pace,Though chariots roll and warriors blaze with might,True triumph stems from virtue’s chaste embrace.Claim not as yours the good with selfish right,Nor scorn another's worth in jealous flame;Be sun in strength, the moon in temper bright,Rain-like in bounty, lifting want and shame,Live long—outlast the sands by ocean's foam,Where Murugan makes Senthil's hills his name.PURANANURU - 55POET : MADURAI MARUDHAN ILANAGANARPATRON : THE VIRTUOUS MARAN, A PANDYA KINGNOTE:Senthilmurugan is a name referring to Lord Muruga. Senthil is one of the special names of Lord Murugan. This symbolizes the red color and strength of Lord Murugan. Murugan is revered as a Tamil god and belongs to the six astral houses. The name ‘Murugan’ is derived from the root Tamil word murugu, a term associated with beauty, divinity and youth. Tiruchendur holds a special place among Murugan’s abodes, as it is where he defeated the demons Soorapadman, Singhamukhan and Tarakasuran, symbolizing the victory of truth over evil. Situated by the sea, it represents Murugan’s role as a refuge for those seeking to transcend material life.
