POEM FROM TAMIL LITERATURE - THE HEIR OF SIBI: STORMBREAKER OF THE FORT
from BEYOND THE OBVIOUS · host Purushothaman C
ABOUT THE POEM:The poem THE HEIR OF SIBI: STORMBREAKER OF THE FORT praises a heroic descendant of King Sibi Chakravarthi, a legendary ruler known for his selfless compassion (even giving his own flesh to save a dove). Just like Sibi, this warrior is celebrated for his nobility and power.Even though he knew it was not right to destroy a fort that housed a king with his elephants, he still possessed the strength and skill to do so in battle. His attack on the fort is described using two vivid similes:Like a five-headed serpent entering a place with deadly force.Like lightning striking a mountain, splitting it open. The moat around the fort was dangerous—it held crocodiles that would lunge at anything that cast a shadow, even mistaking reflections for prey. Despite all these dangers and defenses, the hero broke through the fort’s mighty walls. In short, the poem glorifies the valor, wisdom, and destructive power of a great king who is both noble like Sibi and fearsome in war like a divine force of nature.THE HEIR OF SIBI: STORMBREAKER OF THE FORTHail to the Heir of the King Sibichakravarthi bold,Who eased the pain of birds in grief and plight,Whose ancient tale of mercy still is told.Though in the fort, the king with elephants mightReside, and breaking it would seem unjust,You struck with strength, discerning wrong from right.Like five-hooded serpents with a venomous gustThat slither deep into the guarded lair,You pierced the fort with overwhelming thrust.Like lightning's lash that rends the mountain bare,You shattered stone with thunderous decree—No wall could stand your wrathful, righteous glare. The moat around the fort, a biting sea,Where shadows flicker in the lantern’s gleam,Became a snare for crocodiles' cruel spree. You broke the fort as in a storm-born dream,With power that gods and legends would admire—A tale to stir the soul and spirit's stream.PURANANURU 37POET : MADROKKATHU NAPPACHALAIYARPATRON: KILLI VALAVAN, THE CHOLA KING WHO RESTS AT KULAMUTRAM
