ABOUT THE POEM: The poem THE SPLENDOR OF VANJI : A SONG OF VALOR AND GRACE celebrates the grandeur and cultural richness of the ancient city of Vanji, renowned for its connection to the Porunai River (modern-day Thamiraparani) and its illustrious king. The city is depicted as a thriving and prosperous hub, adorned with both natural beauty and the achievements of its brave rulers. Vanji is not merely a geographical entity but a symbol of victory, glory and artistic expression. The narrative paints vivid imagery of the Porunai River’s sandy banks, where the city’s maidens engage in playful, artistic rituals. These women, described as possessing silky hair and graceful arms adorned with delicate ornaments, craft dolls from the river sand. They embellish these creations with fresh flowers, showcasing their skill and creativity. After completing their artistic endeavors, they plunge into the cool, flowing waters of the river, their joy and beauty intertwined with the natural surroundings. Amidst this backdrop of cultural vibrancy and natural splendor, the poem shifts focus to the king of Vanji. He is portrayed as a valiant conqueror who overcomes mighty fortresses with ease and demonstrates unparalleled strength and strategic prowess. The poetess extols his achievements, weaving his victories into an immortal song of praise. Moved by her eloquent verses, the king rewards the poetess generously, offering her exquisite ornaments of unparalleled beauty and abundance. Additionally, he bestows upon her accompanist, a bard who played a key role in the performance, a rare and precious golden lotus, crafted with silver threads. These gifts symbolize the king’s recognition and gratitude for the artistry and devotion of those who celebrate his legacy through their talents. The poem underscores the interconnectedness of art, nature, and heroism, presenting a timeless portrait of a city and its ruler whose splendor echoes across the ages. THE SPLENDOR OF VANJI : A SONG OF VALOR AND GRACE A bard renowned for songs of vast terrain, Sang of Vanji, the city proud and grand, Where cool Porunai runai waters weave their chain. This Vanji, blessed with wealth on every strand, With glory soaring high to kiss the skies, And victories carved by valor’s mighty hand. On Porunai sands, where dreams and beauty rise, The maidens shaped soft dolls with care refined, Then crowned their work with blooms of fragrant guise. Their supple arms with silken threads entwined, Their flowing locks as gentle as the breeze, They leapt into the stream, pure joy unlined. The king who claimed the fortresses with ease, And triumphed o’er the strong with dauntless pride, Inspired the poetess to sing of these. Her verse exalted him, her words his guide, And in return, with lavish gifts he showered, A wealth of jewels, a treasure spread wide. To the bard who played and with her voice empowered, He gave a golden lotus, fine and rare, Its threads of silver spun, its beauty towered.
