POEM FROM TAMIL LITERATURE - UNIVERSAL CHARITY

from BEYOND THE OBVIOUS · host Purushothaman C

ABOUT THE POEM: The poem UNIVERSAL CHARITY speaks to the complex web of relationships and responsibilities we navigate in life. It starts by acknowledging the presence of love in our lives both given and received. However, it swiftly turns to recognize the presence of countless others, perhaps less close to us, who are in dire need. These could be our extended family, neighbors or strangers whom we may not know personally but who nonetheless deserve our assistance. Further, the poem highlights the concept of indebtedness suggesting that there are people to whom we owe something, whether it be tangible or intangible. It emphasizes the importance of not forgetting these individuals and ensuring that they also benefit from our actions. The speaker urges a selfless approach to distributing wealth and resources, advocating for a lack of discrimination in our generosity. There's a call to transcend selfish concerns and embrace a mindset of abundance, where resources are shared freely without hesitation or reservation. The reference to Kumanan, the ruler of the Mudirai hills, adds a touch of context and imagery, suggesting a source of wealth or abundance that is available to be shared among all. Overall, the poem encourages a compassionate and inclusive approach to life where generosity and kindness are extended to all who are in need, regardless of their relationship to us or our perceived obligations towards them. UNIVERSAL CHARITY  In life's intricate design, There are those who hold affection for you, And likewise, you hold dear those a few. Yet, amidst this affectionate bond, Lurk kinfolk, countless, in dire straits, Their hunger unappeased, their needs profound. Then there are those, distant perhaps, Whom you're indebted to, by some unspoken pact, Let them not be forgotten, let them benefit too. My dear, let no caution restrain your hand, No need for prudent, worldly guise, For in the realm of giving, Discrimination finds no place. Let the wealth, bestowed upon us, By Kumanan, sovereign of the Mudirai hills, Rich in their bounty, abundant in their yield, Be shared amongst all, without bias or divide.
