Poet, memoirist and critic Carmen Bugan will be reading and in conversation with poet and professor Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, School of English TCD. The event will be chaired by Prof Michael Cronin, School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies TCD. Carmen Bugan is an award-winning writer based in Long Island, NY. She is currently an Adjunct Professor at Stony Brook University, where she teaches literature and creative writing. She was born in Romania and has lived in England, Ireland, and France. Educated at the University of Michigan and Balliol College, Oxford, where she took a PhD in English Literature, she is the author of five collections of poems, including Time Being (2022); an Orwell Prize-shortlisted memoir, Burying the Typewriter: Childhood under the Eye of the Secret Police (2012), which documents her experience growing up in Romania where her father was a prominent critic of the Ceaușescu regime; and a highly praised critical study, Seamus Heaney and East European Poetry in Translation: Poetics of Exile (2013). Her book of essays, Poetry and the Language of Oppression (OUP, 2022) was named an “essential book for writers” by Poets and Writers. Her work has been translated into several languages and appears in publications such as PEN Atlas, Modern Poetry in Translation, the TLS, Harvard Review, and PN Review.
