Poison Ear Drops & Dirty Sword Oaths — Hamlet Act 1, Scene 5

from Whine with Some Cheese · host Michael Seong

It’s a Tuesday. A Tuesday. And somehow we’re being forced to process Hamlet, Act 1 Scene 5, the scene where the Ghost finally speaks, immediately overshares, and turns Hamlet’s life into a full-time revenge internship with zero benefits.Hamlet follows his father’s spirit into a remote, unheated part of the castle (no HVAC, no boundaries). The Ghost reveals he’s “doom’d… to walk the night,” hints at unspeakable afterlife horrors, and then drops the real tea: Claudius murdered him while he slept, by pouring “cursed hebenon” into his ear. Ear poison. Sleep hygiene violation. Criminal. The Ghost demands revenge, throws shade at Gertrude, and then adds the most emotionally exhausting caveat possible: avenge me… but don’t come for your mother. Hamlet reacts like a man with no coping mechanisms, wipes his memory “table,” swears eternal vengeance, and then makes Horatio and Marcellus swear secrecy over and over—on a sword that is absolutely not sanitized—while the Ghost pops up from under the stage yelling “Swear!” like a demonic building inspector. We whine about:Purgatory being described like a toxic wellness retreatPoison-as-ear-drops (unsanitary, invasive, rude)Ghost ex behavior: dramatic, bitter, and boundary-freeHamlet’s immediate spiral into all-caps revenge journalingThe “antic disposition” plan (performative madness, exhausting)“There are more things…” and “The time is out of joint” as peak drama brandingPour something chilled, cut the cheese, and remember: if the time is out of joint, it’s not your job to fix it. That’s what assistants are for.
