Politics, Popes, and the Power of Prayer (The Patrick Madrid Show)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

If you’ve ever wondered what happens behind the red curtains of the papal conclave, this episode of The Patrick Madrid Show is like a backstage pass. Patrick explains that while the conclave is sacred, it's also undeniably human. 🙋‍♂️     🗺️ Different Continents, Different Cardinals, One Church   Patrick responds to John's question from Tampa about the "political" side of electing a pope. He starts with a quote-worthy reflection on how, “As human beings, we are naturally political.” Not in the divisive Twitter-fight way 😅, but in the classic Aristotelian sense: we form groups, we organize, and yes, we sometimes disagree.   📍 Once dominated by European (especially Italian) cardinals, the Church's leadership has become way more global. Now you’ve got voting cardinals from:   -Latin America 🌎   -North America 🌎   -Asia and Africa 🌍   …and pretty much every corner of the Catholic world.   This makes for a spiritual stew of personalities, perspectives, and pastoral priorities. The conclave is a melting pot of ideologies united by faith.     ⚖️ Politics in the Church? Yep... But Not the Kind You’re Thinking   Patrick clears the air: "Politics" in the Church isn’t backstabbing and lobbying, but more about human beings grappling with how to best serve God’s people. There are different visions for what the “right direction” for the Church looks like. And each cardinal walks into that Sistine Chapel with not just their red hat, but their cultural and theological influences too.   But... and this is key; it’s not all human strategy. The Church isn’t just a spiritual United Nations. It’s mystical. It’s supernatural. ✨🕊️     🙏 Patrick reminds us that we need to pray.    “Pray that the Lord would guide His Church... that the next Pope will be courageous, faithful, and maybe even willing to lay down his life for Jesus.”   Whew. That’s a call for every Catholic kneeler. And John nails it too when he says: “We forget the mystical aspect of the Church.”     The best way to listen to the Best of the Week is on our #1 Free Catholic App. It’s free and always will be!
