Recent archaeological research in Pompeii has successfully identified the remains of a Roman physician who perished during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. By utilizing modern X-ray and CT imaging, scientists examined a plaster cast from 1961 to reveal a collection of surgical instruments and a stone tablet used for preparing ancient medications. The victim was discovered in a vineyard alongside a dozen others, carrying a small pouch containing silver and bronze coins in addition to his professional equipment. Experts suggest these findings highlight the high status of medicine in Roman society and the individual's possible intent to provide aid during the catastrophe.
