The first sermon that Jesus delivered is known as the sermon on the mount recorded in Matthew 5-7. He preached it to His disciples as well as others that had gathered. The primary audience was those who had believed on Him. The sermon served as instructions for how His own should live. In the first part of the sermon (Matthew 5:1-12) we find the beatitudes. These describe the attitudes followers of Christ should maintain. The emphasis of the beatitudes is that God blesses a life of inward character. Today we will learn that the life that God blesses is one of humility and surrender.
