According to ancient tradition, he was the brother of Hermas, author of the Shepherd of Hermas, and devoted himself to strengthening ecclesiastical discipline, safeguarding the integrity of the faith, and opposing the growing influence of Gnostic teachers, especially Marcion, whom tradition holds was excommunicated during his pontificate. Pius encouraged the orderly development of the Church's worship and governance as Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire despite continued hostility. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
