Positive reaction to nitrates derogation extension

A Sligo farming official has welcomed the extension of Ireland's nitrates derogation.The decision was taken following a vote by the EU Nitrates Committee on Tuesday.A reduction in chemical nitrogen allowances and increased buffer zones around rivers are some of the new conditions attached to the extension.Farming Authorities will have to carry out field inspections on at least 10% of derogation farms every year to ensure they are complying with the terms of the derogation.Sligo Chairperson of the IFA Michael O'Dowd says the decision provides Irish farmers with clarity for the next three years:
