Lundi 25 mai, une nouvelle bavure policière a mis le feu aux États-Unis. Cette bavure, c’est celle qui a conduit à la mort de George Floyd, citoyen afro-américain de 46 ans, tué lors de son interpellation à Minneapolis. On a tous et toutes vu les images insoutenables de cet homme noir, plaqué au sol et étouffé par le policier Derek Chauvin, depuis inculpé pour «meurtre au 3e degré» et «acte cruel et dangereux ayant causé la mort».Ces images ont provoqué de nombreuses manifestations dans plus de 140 villes du pays, certaines dégénérant en émeutes et en pillages. Mardi 2 juin, à peine sortis de l’épidémie de Covid-19, les gouverneurs de vingt-et-un États faisaient intervenir la Garde nationale, tandis que de très nombreuses villes décrétaient un couvre-feu et que le New York Times recensait déjà 5 victimes. Le pays est sous tension et Donald Trump souffle sur les braises, en se mettant en scène comme le président de la loi et de l’ordre, «Law and Order», comme il l'a tweeté. Pourquoi ces violences sont-elles si nombreuses? Pourquoi la communauté afro-américaine en est-elle particulièrement victime? La société américaine est-elle raciste?
