A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan, killing at least 14 people, injuring dozens, and triggering a massive, suspected gas explosion that ripped through a major shopping mall. The tremor hit Kyushu Island in the Kumamoto Prefecture at approximately 4:27 p.m. local time.
