Emer grew up in Northern Ireland during what is known as The Troubles (a period of conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted about 30 years from the late 1960s to the 1990s). Like many growing up in the midst of a conflict it coloured her outlook and in her case career choices - she first became a lawyer and later moved into advocacy taking an interest in the area of elders in particular. She shares her experience of midlife especially those things that affect of lot of people at this time such as growing children and aging parents.  This conversation will help trigger long term thinking about how we might plan for our own later lives, as well as thinking about approaching those sometimes difficult conversations with aging parents. Later in our conversation Emer discusses what can practically be done such as family decisions, financial, legal & medical matters. As she says, the sooner we have those conversations the better and easier it will be in the long run.  You can find out more about Emer at the following:- Website: www.emerlavineldercare.ie  Email:  [email protected]  FB: https://www.facebook.com/emerlavineldercare Linked In: https://ie.linkedin.com/in/emerlavin

Indian Summer by William Dean Howells (1837 - 1920) LibriVox In his novel Indian Summer, William Dean Howells presents a mellow but realistic story that has the complete feel of that delightful time of the year, although the plot actually spans several seasons. The Indian summer aspect applies to a sophisticated gentleman, Theodore Colville, who has just entered his middle years as he returns to a scene, Florence, Italy, that played an important part in his early manhood. It was here twenty years earlier that he first fell in love, seemingly successfully until a sudden and harsh rejection. Now, after a once profitable career as a newspaper editor has ended, he is barely ensconced in the Italian city when he meets a lady from his past, a close friend of his lost love. Lina Bowen, now a widow with a young daughter, is an attractive and charming socialite among the American and English residents of Florence. Also living with her at this time as a temporary ward is a beautiful young girl just blossoming into womanhood, Imogene Graham.Col
