Practice Silence

from Navigate The Day · host Navigate The Day

Have you ever said something in the heat of the moment that you wished you could take back? Words can escape in seconds, but the consequences can last much longer. In this episode of Navigate the Day, I reflect on Zeno’s reminder that a careless tongue can cause damage that is far more difficult to repair than a simple physical mistake. I’ve never been particularly proud of how I can speak when I’m in a bad mood. Frustration can bring out a mean-spirited side of me, and I’ve said things in the past that I wish I could undo. These days, I often choose to keep to myself, partly because I prefer solitude, but also because I know how easily a passing emotion can turn into words that create unnecessary conflict. Learning to bite my tongue has helped me in some situations, though I still have to question whether I’m practicing self-control or simply avoiding people altogether. That distinction becomes important as I consider what it means to be honest. I’ve sometimes treated bluntness as a virtue, as if saying exactly what I think is proof of integrity. But honesty doesn't automatically make a statement helpful, and having an opinion doesn't mean I need to express it. There is a difference between speaking the truth with consideration and using the truth as an excuse to be harsh. Learning to recognize that difference is harder than it sounds, especially when frustration makes my own judgment feel unquestionable. I also reflect on the gap between understanding Stoic principles and putting them into practice. I can recognize the value of patience, wisdom, and self-discipline without consistently living by them. Sometimes I become so caught up in analyzing what the Stoics mean that I lose sight of the practical choices in front of me. Other times, I use what I've learned to criticize myself rather than to make a better decision. Knowledge alone hasn't given me the peace or satisfaction I hoped to find, and I'm still trying to understand what it means to turn that knowledge into something useful. Ultimately, practicing silence isn't about suppressing every uncomfortable thought or pretending that nothing bothers me. Some conversations need to happen, some truths need to be spoken, and some boundaries need to be established. The challenge is learning to recognize when my words serve a purpose and when they're simply an outlet for an emotion that will eventually pass. I won't always get that right. But I can try to pause before reacting, consider the person on the receiving end, and ask myself whether what I'm about to say is true, necessary, and worth saying. That small pause may not solve every disagreement, but it gives me a chance to respond with intention rather than impulse. Perhaps wisdom begins not with knowing the perfect thing to say, but with learning when to speak, how to speak, and when to let a thought pass without giving it a voice.
