Practicing Realistic Optimism

from Psychology to Live By · host Dr. Chris Stevens

The podcast ‘Practising Realistic Optimism’ looks at practical ways to develop realistic optimism: an orientation that emphasizes what we can do rather than what we can’t do. It is practising the art of the possible.  Human freedom lies in the changes we can make to our experience by either changing the world (where we can), but mostly by changing our mindset in terms of: 1. what we pay attention to and 2. how we pay attention. This kind of optimism is very grounded in reality but maintains an unwavering faith in the future.  Strategies outlined include shifting attention to aspects of reality that are more useful, and changing our manner of thinking by being more realistic & more optimistic – thereby prioritising our own happiness.
