Praying Through Acts: Acts 2 God's Overflow
from Pat's View: Inspirational stories
I hope you are doing well! Thank you for joining me. I'm on Day 2 of Acts. When He first started talking to me all I heard was a single word, "Overflow." I thought of David's declaration in Psalm 23:5 BSB "My cup overflows." I began to think about the verse and because I love beautiful table settings, I could easily imagine what a grand and elegant table that He might set for me in the presence of my enemies. David was expressing more than a pretty table or great food. I believe that David was expressing that in the midst of difficult situations and trouble God provides, not just a little dab, but lavishly; abundantly until it overflows. At this point I'm remembering a 2nd picture that takes me to Wayne's childhood visits to his grandpa's house. His grandma would boil the coffee on the gas stove in an old, dented aluminum coffee pot with a glass knob on top of the lid. When the coffee had boiled to her satisfaction, she carefully placed the cup in a saucer, filled it and carried it to Pa. Pa did something that amazed my husband. He lifted the cup off the saucer and pour the boiling hot liquid into the saucer. The coffee cooled quick enough that his Pa could slurp the coffee from his saucer. But I don't believe the overflow that puddles into the saucer is there for me to consume like Pa did his morning coffee! I believe the overflow is for giving away! Over again and again I felt the prompting of Holy Spirit, Overflow! This is the year of overflow. I'm going after the overflow!!! I realize that overflow, flows out of an intimate relationship with Jesus. Please let me show you how He describes overflow. John 7:37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: 'Streams of living water will flow from within him.'" (Talking about overflow!!!! Wow!) 39He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. Glorified? Crucified. Resurrected. Ascended to the right hand of the Father. Glorified! Pour Out Joel, Isaiah and John, the Baptist, Prophesied of the great outpouring. The Father Promised it, Jesus Proclaimed it and on the Day of Pentecost Peter Explained it when they were accused of being drunk. 16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17'In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18Even on My menservants and maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. Jesus has a different role! 33Exalted, then, to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. Can you imagine? Can you imagine what you would have heard? Yes, there was tongues, but there were people, lots of people praising and magnifying God! Yet Peter didn't limit the event to what they heard, because this outpouring touched more than their vocal cords…look again at what Peter says…"and has poured out what you now see and hear. What did they see? People responding to the Father's Promised Gift. Responding to Jesus' mighty outpouring. Who is this Promise for? Peter tells us. Acts 2: 39 English Standard Version For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself." My prayer: Father, help us to believe Your promise is for us, so that Your lavish outpouring can overflow through us, so we can be the witnesses that you have called us to be! Help us to be thirsty for living water! In Jesus Mighty name, Amen.
