Hello, welcome back to another episode of Broken Records. My name is Ellie, I'm your host, and that was just Flowers by Miley Cyrus. And I thought this week it would be very fun to do a Grammys episode because the Grammys are on Sunday. And very exciting news, I have a virtual media pass for the Grammys.

So I will be on Zoom talking to whatever celebrities decide to stop by and talk to me over Zoom. So I'm very excited. I get to have access to the red carpet and to the media center. And the media center is basically the winner's room, I like to call it.

That's where all the winners of Grammys go after they win. They do a little bit of press, they take some pictures, answer a couple questions, and I will be able to be in that room, see who walks by, hopefully ask some people questions. And I'm very excited. I think it's so cool.

Like, I'm just an 18-year-old high schooler attending school in a small town outside of Seattle. Like, I don't know how or why the Grammys let me get a virtual media pass, but I am so grateful and I'm so excited to see how this all works because this is my first, like, official media pass that I've had. And it's so exciting. So that was just Flowers by Miley Cyrus.

And so before I talk about Flowers, all these songs I'm going to be playing are nominated in some way, shape, or form. And so Flowers by Miley Cyrus is nominated multiple times. So it's up for Record of the Year, and it's also up for Song of the Year. And so Record of the Year and Song of the Year are similar but different in the sense that they are judging songs.

And the songs that are picked for Song of the Year is being judged based off of songwriting. So, like, if you're a song somebody for Song of the Year, the winner is being judged on the lyrics and the songwriting within that song versus Record of the Year, which is being judged by the producers and engineering and mixing. And so that's more of, like, a technical award versus Song of the Year, which is, like, just lyrics, basically. Or lyrics are the main focus.

And so I always thought that was very interesting because a couple years ago I was very confused about, like, why do they have two categories that are basically the same nominations, give or take one or two songs? And now you know what? Because they're judged differently. So Endless Summer Vacation is the album that Flowers is on, and it's also up for album of the year, Miley Cyrus' Endless Summer Vacation.

So that is very exciting. And next I want to talk about Miss Taylor Swift and her Grammy nominations. But first, let's listen to Antihiro. So Antihiro is Taylor Swift's main song single that is nominated this year.

So it's up for Record of the Year, it's up for Song of the Year, it's also a part of Midnight, which is up for Album of the Year. I believe it's nominated for more as well. I know Taylor Swift is nominated for more categories. Yeah, so Taylor Swift is nominated for more categories.

She's nominated for Best Pop Duo Group Performance for Karma, which is Taylor Swift featuring Ice Spice. And then she's also nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance for Antihiro. And so it's very exciting. She's nominated a bunch this year.

Hopefully she wins a bunch this year. I'm always a Taylor Swift supporter. And so it will be very exciting to see what she wins. And I am so excited to see it.

So the next group that I want to talk about is Boy Genius. I absolutely adore Boy Genius. I think they are geniuses, no pun intended. And they actually got a lot of recognition this year, which is super awesome to see.

They're nominated for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and I believe Song of the Year as well. No, not Song of the Year. My bad. So not Song of the Year.

They're nominated for Record of the Year, Album of the Year. They're nominated for a couple of rock categories. And I love Boy Genius. So the song that has been nominated a lot is Not Strong Enough, and so we will play that next.

But they also are nominated for their album, which is called The Record. And that is nominated as an album a couple of times. And I'm so excited because I think that this record, this song, all of the things that are nominated for Boy Genius are so good, and I love listening to it. And I'm still glad they got some recognition because they really have been killing it lately, and I feel like they kind of have a niche audience.

I wouldn't say niche, but I wouldn't say they're as mainstream as Miley Cyrus or Olivia Rodrigo or Taylor Swift. But they are pretty popular, and so I'm very glad that they got some recognition. And hopefully they win some stuff. I think that would be super cool.

So I'll play Not Strong Enough right now. I love Not Strong Enough. I think it is such a good song. I love listening to it.

And the chorus is always stuck in my head, so I'm sorry if I just made it stuck in yours. But I really recommend listening to Boy Genius more. Off of their new album, The Record, I really, really, really like listening to Cool About It, Emily I'm Sorry, Not Strong Enough, and Satanist. I think Satanist is such a fun song.

It's, oh my gosh, they're just brilliant. I love listening to them. Yeah, super cool. And the next song we're going to play is by Gracie Abrams.

And Gracie Abrams is nominated for Best New Artist. And I'm so excited and proud of her because I love Gracie Abrams. I've seen her in concert five times, I think. I've seen her a lot, and I love her so much.

I love talking with her because I have been able to talk with her, which is super, super cool. But yeah, I love Gracie Abrams. She's so sweet. She's so adorable.

Her music is incredible. I love listening to it. And so I'm so glad that she's now a Grammy-nominated artist and a potentially winner. I just, I love Gracie.

She's so incredible. And so she also is up against some tough competition, though, I will say. So Best New Artist, the nominations for that are Gracie Abrams, Fred Again, Ice Spice, Jelly Roll, Cocoa Jones, Noah Kahn, Victoria Monet, The War and Treaty. So she's got some big names up against her.

Noah Kahn. I wouldn't be surprised if Noah Kahn or Ice Spice or Gracie Abrams won. I think those are my top three. I think Noah Kahn really, really, really deserves to win this because the blurb that describes the category says, this category recognizes an artist whose eligibility year releases achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and notably impacted the musical landscape.

And I definitely think Noah Kahn has done that. He has released so many collaborations this year. He's released so many songs this year. He definitely has gained a lot of popularity.

And so I think Noah Kahn is very, very, very, very, a very strong contender. I also think Gracie Abrams can win it. I hope she does. I love her and I want to see her succeed.

Although I think Ice Spice definitely has gained that popularity and definitely has affected the public consciousness, if you will. And so I wouldn't be surprised to see any of those three win. I haven't really listened to some of the others, like Fred Again and Jelly Roll. I haven't really listened to them, but I'm sure they deserve it.

Grammy-nominated artists, that's a big deal. They wouldn't be nominated for nothing. So I don't know. We'll see.

But anyway, here's Gracie Abrams with Feels Like. Oh, this is what it feels like. I love Gracie Abrams so much. And I love the song I just played.

It is called Feels Like. And that's a song that I discovered her through. And I'm so excited I did because I love that song. And I love Gracie.

And I've really gotten to see her grow so much because that song is off of her first EP. That was an EP. And so I've got to see the release of her first album, some singles, and see her on tour. I love Gracie so much.

And she's so adorable, so amazing. And fingers crossed she wins Best New Artist. We'll see, we'll see, we'll see. Yeah, so amazing.

And the next person I'm going to talk about is Ed Sheeran. I love Ed Sheeran personally. I think he's hilarious. And I think he's an incredible artist.

He is very talented. And so he's nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album with Subtract. And so I thought it would be very fun to just talk about that because over the summer, Ed Sheeran did a Subtract tour along with a Mathematics tour. And so basically he did this where whenever he was visiting a new city, one night he would perform in a theater-sized venue and would perform the whole of Subtract.

He would play all of the songs from the Subtract album along with a couple others from different albums. And then the next day he would play a football stadium and would sing a bunch of songs from a bunch of different albums. And so he did this because he said that Subtract doesn't really feel like a stadium album. Like it doesn't feel like that's what the songs on Subtract are meant to be played in a stadium.

And I totally agree. And I think it's so cool that he did a theater tour coinciding with his stadium tour. And so it was very cool, very special. And so, I don't know, Subtract is a very emotional album.

It talks about a lot of highs and lows. And it was really cool to hear about because I was lucky enough to go to the Subtract show, the theater show, when he was in Seattle. And he would explain like every song and tell us why he wrote it, tell us how he wrote it, what he was feeling that day. Like it was very cool and intimate.

And it was just so sad and so moving. And it was incredible. And so I recommend listening to Subtract, but be ready to feel the feels because it is very sad. But it's incredibly well done.

And it's just, it's really something special. So this album, Subtract, is actually not his most recent album that he's released. He released another album called Autumn Variations. And so this album has a couple more upbeat songs.

So I felt like it would be good if we played one from Autumn Variations. And it is called American Town. We were the only way from home. English girl in American Town.

I love that song. I think it's so cool. So the Seattle show of this, like what that Ed was doing, that was, those were before Autumn Variations came out. But Ed sang this song and two others from Autumn Variations.

And so I immediately became hooked on American Town. I thought it was so fun, so catchy. I love the part where he's like English girl in American Town. I think he sings it so fun.

And I always just like mimic it. And oh my gosh, I just love that song. I think it's so fun. And I love Ed's accent.

It just makes everything so much better. And I love listening to it. So yeah, go Ed. The next artist I want to talk about is Olivia Rodrigo.

She is nominated for a bunch of stuff as well. A lot of the same categories that Taylor Swift is nominated for. She's nominated for Record of the Year for Vampire. She's nominated Album of the Year for Guts, Song of the Year, Vampire.

She's nominated for, or actually her producer is nominated for Producer of the Year. So the work that he's done with Olivia, like the producing work he's done with Olivia, along with other artists, like Caroline Polacek and Chappelle Rohn, have gotten nominated for Producer of the Year. So that's really cool. His name is Dan Nigro.

So we'll see, we'll see, we'll see. And so Olivia Rodrigo is also nominated for a pop solo performance for Vampire, a pop vocal album for Guts, and a bunch of other stuff. So we'll see. Hopefully Olivia can win some.

I think she is just adorable as well. I love her music so much. I think it's so relatable. And I love listening to it.

So for our last song of this episode, here is Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl. That was just Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl by Olivia Rodrigo. And I love that song so much. I love the production.

And I think the lyrics are very relatable. And I just love it so much. It's definitely one of my favorite songs off of Guts, her most recent album. And I just love it so much.

Olivia Rodrigo is so talented. And I'm very excited to see if she wins anything on Sunday. So we'll see. Fingers crossed.
