Pregnancy and The Eye Part 1

Pregnancy can induce various changes in the eyes, often due to hormonal fluctuations, increased blood volume, and changes in metabolism and immune function. Common ocular changes include dry eyes, which result from altered tear production, and refractive changes that may temporarily affect vision clarity. Additionally, some women might experience an increase in pigmentation on the eyelids or face. Or the pregnancy can cause central serous chorioretinopathy, where fluid accumulates under the retina, potentially causing blurred vision. More serious eye-related issues can arise, particularly in women with pre-existing conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. Pregnancy can exacerbate diabetic retinopathy, a condition where blood vessels in the retina are damaged, leading to vision problems. Preeclampsia, characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine, can also cause vision disturbances such as flashing lights, auras, or even temporary vision loss.  There can be pituitary tumors that present as visual field changes in pregnancy.  There are other rare eye cancers that can occur during pregnancy. Regular eye check-ups and managing underlying health conditions are essential for maintaining eye health during pregnancy.
