Pregnancy and the Eye Part 2

Pregnancy can bring about several changes in a woman's eyes and vision due to hormonal shifts, increased blood volume, and fluid retention. These changes are generally temporary and typically resolve after childbirth. However, in the third trimester of pregnancy there can be some serious issues for the pregnancy patient.  If there is hypertension, the retina can be affected. This condition is called pre-eclampsia. High blood pressure during pregnancy can cause visual disturbances like flashing lights or temporary vision loss.   There can loss of vision due to retinal artery occlusion during pregnancy, a rare but unfortunate complication of pregnancy and high blood pressure or heart disease. If the patient has gestational diabetes, the patient may or may not have eye changes.  Most likely eye changes occur in diabetic pregnant patients, i.e., patients with pre-existing diabetes.  It's essential for pregnant women to have regular eye exams and consult their healthcare providers if they notice any significant changes in their vision to ensure both their health and the health of their baby
