PREMIERE: Despina - Vitamin Party [Kindergarten]

Kindergarten Records starts off the new year with a deep dive towards our intimate, digital futures; courtesy of Despina - who rings in 2021 with a solo four-tracker entitled Data Soft. Coming off their debut on our label through a split EP with Kindergarten residents Ma Sha Ru entitled 'Polychronia' - as well as a track on Kindergarten's frst compilation, 'Fluo I' - Despina provides a journey that leads to reconciling the ways that the digital world has seeped into our most private aspects. From ascending sonics to jagged juxtapositions of rhythm, texture and harshness - Data Soft is a record that delineates our current social climate succinctly with each passing kick and snare. “Vitamin Party” plays off the electrolytics of the former track, lulling the listener towards a comfortable nestle until the drop hits hard - cataclysmic and crisp percussion that invites the listener to get cautiously cozy with an ASMR layer of metaphysical stabilization after the catharsis is reached. Taken as a whole, Data Soft is an attempt to reconcile the ways that the digital world has seeped into our most private aspects. Can we be sensual and celebrate our bodies while corporations defne us with endless data? Is true inner peace even achievable in our strange virtual dystopia? Despina does not seek to answer these questions, but rather to look at the slippery nature of data, sex, and the future through a sonic telescope. Despina (pronouns: they/them) is the pseudonym of New York based producer, composer, and DJ Mica Matchen. Their work explores the dichotomies and contradictions inherent in sound and life: rhythm and texture, male and female, hedonism and mindfulness. As ferce as Mica is with their rhythms, they are just as ferce about their politics, seeking to imbue their work with revolutionary passion, socialist ideals, and an ear to the future.
