Preparation Is Everything
from The Autistic Mile · host Jim Gaffney
Sometimes, a little time to prepare can make all the difference. Giving an autistic individual advance notice and an opportunity to gather themselves before an event can help them feel considerably more comfortable and confident when it comes time to socialize. Social situations can require a great deal of mental preparation. Knowing what to expect, who will be there, what might be asked of them, or simply having some quiet time beforehand can allow an autistic person to organize their thoughts and find their footing before stepping into an unfamiliar or demanding environment. This preparation shouldn’t necessarily be mistaken for reluctance or unwillingness to participate. Sometimes an autistic individual genuinely wants to engage with others—they simply benefit from having enough time to mentally transition and prepare themselves first. #TheAutisticMile #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodiversity #SocialAnxiety #SocialSkills #AutisticAdults #Preparation #AutismAcceptance #UnderstandingAutism #Communication #Inclusion #Empathy #Podcast #YouTubeShorts
