Prepare Him Room: Playroom (2 Samuel 6.12-16, 20)

from Haverhill Commons Church · host Matt Webel

When’s the last time you just played? Kids are experts at this! We can tell a kid to “go play”, and they innately know what that means. We adults can be quite good at finding reasons not to play, not knowing how to play, or frankly, being too busy to play.  In 2 Samuel, David manages to bring the Ark home to Jerusalem and a huge celebration ensues. Harps, tambourines, cymbals. Even David is in the procession, wearing priest’s robes and dancing with all his might. Everyone is full of joy. But then he sees Michal, his wife, who chides him for having made a fool of himself. Michal is in all of us. Michal’s voice is the voice of our inner-critic, weighing and judging and critiquing the ways we and others play. Play is all over Scripture. Jesus himself attended loads of celebrations and dinner parties and says that unless we become like little children, we will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. What if we learned from our children? Believing that God invites us to play, if for no other reason than that God is good.
