Preparing for Death to Live Without Fear
from Echoes for Angela Hosted by Ryan MacLean
Season 2, Episode 43 What does it mean to prepare for death—and could the way we practice living shape the way we finally let go? In this episode of Echoes for Angela, we follow Jesus’ image of the grain of wheat through Scripture, Christian asceticism, the saints, Thomas Aquinas, resurrection, and the unusual postmortem phenomenon known as tukdam. Fasting, prayer, silence, vigil, obedience, and contemplation begin to look like rehearsals in relinquishment: learning that losing food, comfort, control, possessions, or ordinary access does not mean losing the person. We explore people in Scripture who knew they were leaving, Jesus’ deliberate preparation for his own death, and Paul’s extraordinary image of what is “sown corruptible” being “raised incorruptible.” Along the way, we distinguish loss of access from nonexistence and ask what preserved bodies can—and cannot—tell us. The idea is simple enough for Angela: prepare, let go, die, go forward, and bear fruit.
