Preparing your clients for a VBAC

from Birth Healing Summit Podcast · host Lynn Schulte, PT

Do you have clients preparing for a VBAC? Do you want to know what steps you can take to help them?In today’s episode Lynn discusses what she does to help prepare her clients for a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). What we do as practitioners cannot guarantee a specific result, but we can help increase our client’s chances of success with our assessment and treatment of the body. For clients who want a VBAC, it is important to understand what caused the Cesarean Birth in the first place. Was the surgery planned or did the client labor? Get as many details as possible to help you learn what happened prior to doing your assessment. The assessment will include the following steps:Assess the pelvic shape, the arch of the pubic ramus, SIJ and over all boney anatomy for clues as to if anything would obstruct the baby from entering in or through the pelvis.Next assess the lower abdominal fascia, uterine ligaments and the pelvic floor muscles. Then assess for the baby’s position in the pelvis. There is always a reason for the baby’ position. The baby gets to determine how he or she would like to be born. We as practitioners can create space and opportunity in the body to optimize the birth, but we cannot force a position. Many midwives have attested that the body is capable of so much during birth. It can shift positions and it is more than capable of delivering a child vaginally in most cases, so select the words you use with your client, so you are empowering them and their connection to their body. If you would like to learn more about preparing the body for birth check out the Institute for Birth Healing’s new course Pregnancy, Pain and Beyond. Have a comment or question about today’s episode?
