Un liberal único, de Eduardo Nolla, la Fundación FAES reivindica la vigencia del pensador francés como uno de los grandes defensores de la libertad en las sociedades democráticas. A partir de las intervenciones de José María Aznar, Javier Fernández-Lasquetty y del propio autor, se subraya una de las enseñanzas centrales de Tocqueville: la democracia solo puede sostenerse si preserva las instituciones, las costumbres y los principios morales que la hacen posible. No son las leyes por sí solas las que sostienen la libertad, sino el espíritu cívico y el compromiso con la vida pública.El episodio analiza la advertencia tocquevilliana frente a quienes, en nombre de una supuesta profundización democrática, debilitan los límites constitucionales, cuestionan la herencia cultural común o elevan “el número por encima de la ley”, convirtiendo la democracia en una amenaza para la libertad. Nolla explica, además, el carácter “andante” y vital de su liberalismo, su descubrimiento de que incluso con todos los engranajes del liberalismo clásico puede surgir un régimen despótico y su concepción dinámica de la libertad como realidad siempre cambiante, antigua y moderna a la vez, americana y europea, única para cada individuo.
