President Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America | Calgary News

The President just signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America—yes, you read that right—and livestreamed the document, claiming all paperwork’s done. It’s the latest in a string of bold moves, following his failed attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America back in 2025. He blames Canada for “ripping us off” and not paying its fair share in trade, while also pushing back on Ottawa’s push to be treated like a state. The name change, honoring explorer Amerigo Vespucci, contrasts sharply with the lake’s original Iroquoian meaning: “lake of shining waters.” Now, the world watches to see if other nations or states will follow—or if this becomes another political flashpoint.
