from Chiangmai Christian Fellowship · host Tim Dunham

In our journey through the book of Hebrews we come now to the most challenging passage in the entire book. Some claim that it is the most difficult passage in all the New Testament. Here is the main difficulty. The author is clearly writing his sermon to believers. He is deeply concerned about them, not because they are not saved, rather, because they have actually been Christians a long time but are not at the level of maturity that one would expect. This lack of maturity puts them at great risk of “falling away.” The language he uses is very strong. In fact he says that it is impossible for those who have tasted “the goodness of the Word” and then “fallen away” to be “restored again to repentance.” It seems that what he is saying is that there is a danger of losing your salvation. To sum the problem - He is writing to believers; they seem to be in danger of apostasy, that is turning away from God and rejecting the faith; with the result that they lose their salvation.
