[PREVIEW] Ep-2| On the Nature of Māyā, Śakti, and Consciousness

from Viswa Mimamsa - The Philosophical Inquiry of Universe| Sri Ganapati Muni Works in English

Second Adhikaraṇam – Māyādhikaraṇam(On the Nature of Māyā, Śakti, and Consciousness)The Māyādhikaraṇam forms the second major inquiry in Viśvamīmāṁsā, transitioning from the first section’s focus on Sattā (pure Being) and its logical-ontological status, to the dynamic manifestive power by which this Being unfolds into the cosmos.Beginning with a seminal sūtra (21), Śrī Gaṇapati Muni enumerates a group of terms—Māyā, Ambā, Prakṛti, Śakti, Kāla, Dik, Mahimā, and Prāṇa—which are poetically declared to be names or facets of the Consciousness-force (Saṁvit). These are not mere philosophical abstractions, but personified divine functions through which the Absolute takes the form of the universe. The subsequent verses (22–24) expound on each term:Māyā is identified with Ambā, the cosmic Mother, and described as the diversifying power which contains the universe in seed form;Prakṛti is the material substratum of the universe;Śakti is defined as omnipotence;Kāla (Time) as the digestive and transformative agent;Dik (Direction) as the universal support;Mahimā (Greatness) as pervasiveness;Tejas (Light) as Self-luminosity;Prāṇa (Life-force) as the mover of the universe. In this adhikaraṇam, Muni offers a profound synthesis: although these may appear as distinct principles or categories in metaphysical discourse, they are ultimately not separate from Pure Consciousness (Cit). However, in practical and worldly terms, they function as if distinct for the purposes of cosmic operation and philosophical understanding. The latter part of the section (verses 25–31) shifts focus toward the non-dual relationship between Cit (the Knower), Jñāna (Knowledge), and Viśva (the known world). Drawing on analogies like the sun and its rays, the Muni shows how subject and object, knowledge and knower, are experientially divided yet ontologically one in the ocean of Consciousness. Thus, the Māyādhikaraṇam is not merely a theoretical discourse on illusion or power, but a spiritual cartography of how the One becomes Many, while remaining One—offering a vision where Māyā is not denied, but divinised as Ambikā, the face of Consciousness itself.||Indro Viswasya Rajati||
