[PREVIEW] History 420- The 1st Hundred years of Zionism (Isreal in Palestine)

from Recyclables

PTP shares the first 100 years of the Zionist occupation of palestine, to Rochelle Cote and Charlie Hickmott.1880s- Zionism begins as an effort to create a Jewish country, as antisemitism was heightened by nationalism; was thought to be a way to survive; colony seemed like the only way, Argentina (irony 🎶) and Kenya (called Uganda plan) and Egypt (Sinai peninsula and Cypress) before Palestine *Talk about nationalism1904 was when treaty with Britain was signed; called a land without a people, for a people with our a land (not true; full of a mixed population of Christians, Muslims, Jewish people)Right away they use the term Arab (which I think is racist); basically they refused to acknowledge Palestinians existed, and acted like they were interchangeable with other local countries. It was thought there wouldn't be resistance; was right away based on racism… America's history with indigenous tribes comes to mindThe Ottoman Empire; we know he's dying, so can I just have his shit?Belfore Declaration- British promise to establish Jewish homeland in Palestine… After Ottoman Empire falls British occupy the region to fulfill this promise; lied that if the Arab peoples supported overthrowing the ottoman empire would lead to a free state of things For Zionist colonization later was about being a people with a place, rooted in empirical ideas; for great Britain it's about securing control of the middle east to save money on securing control of IndiaColonization continues from 20s to the 40s; it's supported by antisemites who want Jewish people out of their place; also a branch of British Christianity believed the old myth that if Jewish people found a homeland the Messiah would show up (still antisemitic; turns Jewish people into plot coupons for their D&D source book); were also supported by the LeBron James of apartheid (Cecil Rhoades?)Takes a lot of notes from US colonialism; remember the US is still actively manifest destiny-ing when this begins, and kinda wrapping up, which makes this seem doable.Racial segregation and mass killings increases with settlements, especially by those that came in with some amount of wealth or power already.Devil's bargain in the Early era for poorer Jewish people, oftentimes already the immigrants or refugees themselves, thanks to numerous pogroms: Die of antisemitism or kill for colonialism? Also gets into much of what decides “Whiteness” as a concept; much of the British imperial era notion is based on “civilized conquest”, as in “we're bringing civilization”... To your civilization. Uk, is “we're bringing you out of darkness” and the US is “this was ours already, so…”1936 Great Arab revolt, early Intifada, after numerous peaceful protests against British rule; something like 10% of Arab men killed, imprisoned, injured, and/or exiled (I saw 5 just exiled)... Maybe several hundred Jewish people were killed.*Arab peoples were often considered to be siding with the Nazis as they were against Jewish occupation.*Same tactics used on the Irish were being used by Britain hereMilitias of Jewish people begin forming; the US had the Red summer in 1919 incidentally, and in 1934 we were finally agreeing indigenous people could have the bits of land we weren't using… unless like the army or a really big company wants it… don't know what I'd call middle eastern KKK anyways, introduced mass bombings to the middle east.US limits Jewish immigration to force more people to relocate during WW2 to Palestine Zionist wanted to conquer right away, but not reliable; 1937 the British Peele Commission plan suggests forced relocation of 100,000 Palestinians to expand Israeli (non-jewish) lands… doesn't happen WW2 really fucks with things; makes Zionist more “defensively aggressive” ™ by making them feel more justified and gives them an example to follow how to do an ethnic cleansing,WW2 also means British power is waning; hands Palestine and Israeli invasion to UN.UN creates 2 state solution that cuts it up or basically partitions partitions into half dozen Zionist settlements in best places to live; UN goes with partitions, taking Zionist control from 6% to 60% (six 10% regions)- Zionist used the post WW2 sentiment and politics to their advantage The Nakba- Arabic for “the catastrophe”... 1947, shortly after another more liberal land grab… over 1 ½ years 78% taken over violently with ethnic cleansing; over 500 places, at least 155 separate massacres… then places were resettled or built over and entirely renamed… lead to waves of refugeesUsed to be called part of the 1948 war; by the time war happened 300,000 already killedRight Wing Versus leftwing doesn't matter if you're still rooted in evil; most means of resistance had been systemically destroyed, and British (as well as UN) only punished the Palestinians; Zionist often in places in power in their communities 1948 war about Israel declaring itself, while Arab coalition forms (fails) to fight British trained Israeli forces with superior numbers thanks to 3 to 1 advantage; leads to 80% being conquered (but likes to frame it as David versus Goliath ala fascism's need to be strong but under attack)The Nakba and the 1948 war lead to 1 million refugees; many in the West bank and the Gaza strip, basically places Israel couldn't conquer; 80% of population is refugees- 1 in 3 refugees, globally, are Palestinians- there were also internally displaced refugees, and can't return to their homes that are within a days walk of where they are (even if it's empty); against international law or like a war crimeThe House Keys story; thought it would be quick or reversed, has happened in recent history; seems tooIsrael has since upped all its activities, and sorta gives pre citizenship to all Jewish people; established a hierarchy of Israeli Jewish people and other Jewish people… makes me think of being an American immigrant… also many antisemitism groups started by their CIA to push people to come to Israel military government for Palestinians- ghettoizing them1967 war; Neva War slash 6 day war; not defensive “preemptive strike war”; cemented US relationsArab states give up on “free Palestine” and it becomes the PLOs struggle Hamas partially formed in response to peace protests being responded to with extreme violenceZionism isn’t JudaismYouTubeCNN (doesn't mention A LOT)https://youtu.be/zdq3NVtT6Nc?si=8lF7CJcSYuO7BqTOShuanhttps://youtu.be/3xottY-7m3k?si=3cEjR0ZeVO2cpFYiVox https://youtu.be/rGVgjS98OsU?si=yFhafbt3Q06sGjpfSam Seder (mainly historian Rashid Khalidi)https://youtu.be/HBl1t5xI8KM?si=bDMAjD5BOohelwGJHow Israel erases history https://youtu.be/Gvcdk-GQnDY?si=YfBpVAbi_GEK300xSo about the Ottoman Empire…https://youtu.be/SZ8UWobHA3M?si=Cw_ynCCUoEkXlzyPPodcastshttps://open.spotify.com/episode/3mTJRn6SOWimNoGZOdH35X?si=HjCI7MrvQtK9ZuLrUPR_mQ
